21-day Traditional Rites Commence for the new Alafin of Oyo |
On Monday, Governor Makinde formally presented the staff of office to Oba Owoade, symbolizing his authority and legitimacy as the leader of the historic Yoruba kingdom. The new monarch succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away three years ago, leaving behind a legacy of cultural and traditional stewardship.
After receiving his staff of office, Oba Owoade proceeded to Oyo town to meet with his subjects and fulfil a vital customary obligation. The traditional 21-day rites mark a crucial phase in his journey as Alaafin, serving as both a spiritual and cultural initiation into his new role.
According to reports, these rites will commence immediately and are designed to prepare the new monarch for his responsibilities. These customs involve connecting with ancestral traditions, engaging with local spiritual leaders, and participating in ceremonial activities that affirm his role as a bridge between the people and their rich heritage.
A media report stated: “Oba Owoade has travelled to Oyo town to meet the sons and daughters of the community and will embark on the mandatory 21-day traditional rites for his ascension to the throne of his forefathers.”
This process not only upholds the ancient practices of the Yoruba people but also symbolizes the continuity and preservation of their cultural identity, ensuring that the Alaafin is fully integrated into the spiritual and administrative fabric of the kingdom.
