Telecom Tariff Increase: NCC, Stakeholders, and Consumers Set to Meet at 2 PM in Abuja

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has scheduled a stakeholders' meeting in Abuja to address the proposed 100% tariff hike by telecom service providers. The meeting aims to bring together key groups and consumers within the telecommunications sector to discuss and find solutions to the price increase concerns.

A source stated, “I previously mentioned the need for the NCC to engage in discussions to resolve this issue. Yesterday, I received an invitation to the meeting, which will take place on Thursday at 2 PM in Abuja.”

Telecom companies have proposed a 100% increase in service charges, citing rising operational costs, security challenges, and the need to safeguard critical infrastructure such as masts. However, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has not yet approved the request.

Sola Ajulo, president of the Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, confirmed the planned meeting, stressing its importance in resolving the pricing issue. He acknowledged that while a price increase seems unavoidable due to the country’s economic challenges, a balanced approach is necessary.

“All stakeholders must collaborate to establish fair terms, as this will determine whether the government approves a tariff hike,” Ajulo stated. “A sharp increase, such as 100% or even 40%, could be burdensome. A phased adjustment tied to measurable conditions would be more appropriate.”

The NCC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that telecom operators comply with regulatory standards throughout the process.
