FRSC Corps Marshal Expresses Condolences Over Niger State Fuel Tanker Tragedy

Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has conveyed his condolences to the families of those who perished in the fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Niger State on Saturday, January 18th, 2025.

In his statement, Mohammed urged tanker operators to consistently follow safety guidelines and protocols when transloading petroleum products. He described the loss of lives in the tragic incident as deeply saddening and warned that such events must not be allowed to recur.

Despite the FRSC’s ongoing safety campaigns with tanker drivers to promote safety awareness, especially regarding the inflammable nature of petroleum products, the Corps Marshal expressed concern that many people still fell victim to the explosion.

So far, rescue teams have recovered 73 bodies, and arrangements for their burial have been made by the Niger State Government. Mohammed confirmed that FRSC teams are working alongside other agencies to manage traffic at the scene and ensure no further incidents occur.

The Corps Marshal also announced that the FRSC's Accident Investigation Unit will cooperate with other relevant agencies to determine the cause of the fire and implement preventive measures.

“Those injured in the incident are receiving treatment in various hospitals, including Suleja General Hospital, and normal traffic flow has resumed,” Mohammed stated.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration among agencies and the public to prevent such disasters in the future, stressing that strict adherence to safety protocols could have averted the tragedy.

“This painful event follows a similar tragedy in Jigawa last year, and witnessing such a devastating incident so early in the year is both tragic and regrettable,” he added.

Mohammed assured the public that the FRSC would continue working with key stakeholders and the public to address road safety challenges. He called for continued support for those injured and commended the prompt response of the Governor of Niger State, who has
visited the scene.
